Mrs. Black – Resource

About Mrs. Black

I am the school resource and middle school social studies teacher.  I do reading and math remediation and enrichment; sometimes we even work on study skills!
I am not really from anywhere because I am a military brat!  I was raised all over the world; I lived in England, Saudi Arabia, Hawaii, Virginia, California, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Texas, and I even graduated from high school in South Korea!  I would probably consider Southern Virginia my home though, as I spent many years in the area.  I have lived in Southern Maryland for the longest amount of time as we have been here since 2000.
I have my Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh and my Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the College of William and Mary.  I did not go to school locally when I was growing up, nor did I go to a Catholic school; I did get to go to an International school and a Department of Defense school though!  My school in Korea – Seoul American High School – was also a Blue Ribbon School, just like FAW!
I have been teaching for 23 years.  I started off as a classroom teacher in Gloucester, Virginia and I taught 2nd grade and 4th grade.  I have been at FAW since the year 2000 and have been teaching resource ever since!  I love teaching at FAW as I love the FAW family; we are such a wonderful, faith-filled community and it inspires me to remember to let God be present in everything we do every single day!
My husband James and I have been married since 1998.  He is a Captain in the Naval Reserves.  We have four wonderful children who have all attended FAW at some point or other.  I have three boys – Sam, Dane, and Charlie – and one girl – Lily.  My youngest is still a student at FAW.
I love to get to do things with my family.  One of the main things we love to do together is Obstacle Course Racing (OCR).  The races I have done include: Battlefrog, Spartan Sprint, Savage Race, Warrior Dash, and my favorite, a Tough Mudder!  I love the challenge of the races and getting muddy is fun!  When I’m not out crawling through the mud, I love to read, do logic problems, make crafts, and watch the New England Patriots!!!  My favorite foods would include most things that are spicy, especially guacamole, seafood, and pastas!
